Harkness learning is best characterized by student-centered discussions. Similar to Socratic Seminar, Harkness learning places a group of students and their instructor at the same table, charged with the collective tasks of inquiry and collaboration. However, Harkness differs from Socratic learning by placing the responsibility for questioning, evaluating, and contributing on the students. Ultimately, the goal of Harkness learning is to offer students an enhanced understanding of a shared text or artifact.
